About MultiChoice Zambia

A joint venture with the Zambian Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), MultiChoice Zambia has contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the national economy since its establishment in 1994.

Customers of the GOtv (digital terrestrial) and DStv (satellite) services can choose from three and five packages respectively. MultiChoice Zambia business employs 230 full-time staff and contractors and has an on-the-ground network of more than 1 000 agents, installers, sales representatives and retail outlets.

Enriching lives through the power of entertainment is what MultiChoice Zambia is all about. This is the reason we recently commissioned an expert, independent study to put some figures on the economic enrichment our activities and investments have had.

Of course it is impossible to put a financial value on the enjoyment, the excitement, inspiration and upliftment you feel while consuming our programmes. Now is it very easy to calculate what the positive effect our investments in education and in skills development are in kwacha or dollars. Whatever the value of the economic impact, we know that it is real. And we know that, with you, we will keep unlocking greater and greater value for all, through the power of entertainment.

How we create social value

We are proud of our impact on the growth of Zambia’s economy. An independent, expert analysis of MultiChoice Zambia’s economic impact recently estimated this at US$26.9 million in 2011/12, a figure which had more than doubled within three years (by 2014/15) to US$65.5 million a year.

Our indirect impact includes the businesses our operations and products help to sustain for over a thousand agencies, sales representatives, retail outlets and installers. In 2012, MultiChoice Zambia pioneered the introduction of a digital terrestrial TV platform by investing US$14.4 million in a network deploying the world’s most advanced, DVB-T2, technology.

Growing Zambia’s creative industries

In 2016, the year following the launch of Zambezi Magic, the channel had commissioned 300 hours of local content. Delivering Zambezi Magic, a 24/7 channel dedicated to southern Africa as well as ONE Zed launched in 2017 on GOtv in Zambia, MultiChoice is increasingly commissioning content made by Zambians for Zambian audiences. Today, more than a dozen local production houses have produced popular shows like the Kool Roc Show, Kumwesu, Fever, Njila and plenty of others, employing hundreds of actors, directors, writers and skilled technicians.

Further supporting the arts, M-Net and DStv, through Zambezi Magic, provide coverage across the continent of top local events such as the Zambian Film Festival, the Zambian Music Awards and The Poetry Challenge.

Investing in our local sports industry

By sponsoring, and covering, Super League matches live on SuperSport, we ensure that the tournament reaches millions of fans every week. This enables clubs to generate sponsorship and ticket sales, supporting careers in the sports field and creating more funding for sports development.

In addition, SuperSport has trained many Zambians in the various skills that are essential to running a live sports broadcast, and we’ve sponsored specialist training for football administrators.

Enriching lives

Today there are more than 400 MultiChoice Resource Centres (MRCs) all over Zambia, giving tens of thousands of learners and their teachers access to the DStv educational package, Mindset Learn and other top-notch learning content. MRCs are funded by MultiChoice and are planned and developed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
